Constructing the perfect CV – where to begin

Not sure where to start with writing your CV? First and foremost, a good CV needs to be tailored to each job application.

Research
Research is the key to showing you really want to work for your potential employer. Find out about its reputation and how it presents its culture. Include any information about yourself that shows you will fit in with them. This may fit within your ‘Interests’ section if you choose to include one – charity work and sports, for instance. Also search online for the company’s competitors and the issues within the market it operates. This research will help you understand what’s required in the position and make sure you demonstrate your understanding whenever you can in your CV or covering letter.
Layout
There is no single ‘right’ way to construct a CV; within the following guidelines it can be structured and presented as you wish.
Where to start
Most CVs start with personal details. Avoid superfluous information, such as religious affiliation, children’s names and so on. Generally, your nationality and/or working visa details follow, so employers know in advance how long you will be living in the country.
Education and qualifications
Include the names of institutions and dates attended in reverse order, ie university before school results.
Employment history
This should also be set out in reverse date order, starting with your most recent post. Achievements and responsibilities should be listed for each role, with more detail given about more recent jobs.
If you are a graduate or full-time student, and do not yet have a great deal of work experience, highlight the relevant skills that you gained in your course or on work experience. Again, list each position in reverse order, so that the most recent appears first.

Skills
A recruiter may have just a few seconds to spend scanning applications – so consider including a skills section to capture their attention by making it immediately clear what you can offer. Include computer skills, foreign language skills and any other recent training/development that is relevant to the role applied for, such as software packages worked on. Read about developing your skills
Keep the hobbies and interests section short, and rather than going into detail you can state simply that referees are ‘Available on request’.
Formatting
When it comes to the look of your document, it must be clean and well laid out. Hiring organisations are generally inundated with applications, so ensure yours is easy to read. Use a simple font like Arial, 10–12pt, and keep formatting like italics and underlining to a minimum.
Recruitment specialist Michael Page, advises: ‘Your CV should be laser-printed in black ink using a plain typeface, on good quality A4 white/cream paper. Decorative borders are not necessary, nor are photographs of yourself. A good CV should ideally cover no more than two pages and never more than three. Aim to ensure the content is clear, structured, concise and relevant. Using bullet points rather than full sentences can help minimise word usage.’
What not to include
There is no need to include your reasons for leaving each job on your CV, but do be prepared to answer these questions and talk about any gaps in your career history at interview. Current salary details should not be included, but a good covering letter should always accompany your CV.
5 CV essentials
The CV needs to be relevant to the job/company
Show you have a range of experience
Qualifications - clearly detail your achievements
Show you can respond to challenges
Are you passionate about the company? Show it!
Further tips
Once you have completed your CV, it should be checked carefully for grammatical errors and spelling mistakes and to ensure that it makes sense. Ask an ‘independent’ person to review the whole document before you send it.
A personal statement directly beneath your contact details gives employers a snapshot of your key skills and work ambitions and should catch their attention if it marries up with what they are looking for. Remember that employers are interested in the outcome or impact of your actions, not just a list of the tasks themselves. When listing achievements, keep in mind that what really convinces employers is data. If you can illustrate your achievements with facts and figures, then make sure you do.
Above all else, remember that you are trying to sell yourself. Using phrases such as ‘was involved in’ and ‘assisted’ implies that you were more of a bystander than an instigator. Use strong action verbs and take credit where credit is due.
Keep your CV up to date
Experts from recruitment company Hays, conclude: ‘Once you’ve created your CV, a good approach is to treat it as a ‘living’ document, updating it as soon as you undertake any activity that you would like to add to it. By doing this, you don’t have to experience the stress of trying to recall all your duties, training courses and achievements in one sitting. You never know when a new opportunity may present itself and it’s important that you can respond quickly.
‘It’s also a good idea to email your CV to a web-based email account so that you can access it from wherever you are and so that you have a back-up copy of it in the event that your computer breaks down.’
